The twelve houses, one at a time

By Maren Tremblay, Fatesight editor · Last updated

The houses are the twelve parts a birth chart is divided into, each an area of life: the first house is the self, the seventh partnership and the tenth career. A planet's house is read as where its theme shows up in your life, and finding your houses takes your exact birth time.

Each house below has a guide of its own, and the table gives all twelve at a glance.

How to use these guides

Find your houses first: the birth chart calculator places each planet in its house from your birth date, time and place. Then open the house that holds your Sun, your Moon or several planets, since astrologers read a busy house as a busy area of life. Each guide covers what the house is read as, planets in it, love, work, its natural sign and an empty house, and lists the sign each rising sign puts on it.

Angular, succedent and cadent houses

The houses come in three kinds. The angular houses, the first, fourth, seventh and tenth, start at the four angles of the chart and are read as the most active. The succedent houses that follow them, the second, fifth, eighth and eleventh, are read as building and keeping. The cadent houses, the third, sixth, ninth and twelfth, are read as learning and adjusting.

Houses and signs

Every house has a natural sign, from Aries for the first to Pisces for the twelfth, but in your own chart each house starts in whatever sign the turning sky put there at your birth. That is why two people with the same Sun sign can have very different houses. For a planet in a particular house, see planets in the houses; for the short version of all twelve, the twelve houses guide.

The houses: questions people ask

What are the 12 houses in astrology?

The twelve areas of life a birth chart is divided into, from the first house of self, body and first impressions to the twelfth house of the hidden, solitude and the unconscious. The table above gives all twelve.

Which house is the most important?

Astrologers read the four angular houses, the first, fourth, seventh and tenth, as the strongest, and the first house as the most personal, since it starts at your rising sign.

Why do I need my birth time for houses?

The houses are fixed to the horizon of your birthplace, which turns once a day, so the same birth date can put a planet in any house depending on the hour.

What does it mean if a house is empty?

Nothing is missing. Every chart has empty houses, since ten planets can't fill twelve. An empty house is read through the planet that rules its sign.
