Your life path number is the main number in numerology, found by adding the digits of your date of birth until one digit is left, or one of the master numbers 11, 22 and 33. Numerology reads it as your strengths, your style in love and work and the lessons you grow through.

Enter your date of birth to find your life path number: the number numerology reads as your strengths, your style in love and work, and your room to grow.

Your date of birth is used to work out your number and is not stored.

What each number means

Each life path number below has a page of its own: 1 is read as independence, 2 as partnership, 3 as expression, 4 as stability, 5 as freedom, 6 as care, 7 as inquiry, 8 as achievement and 9 as compassion, with 11, 22 and 33 as the master numbers. Each page covers love, work, decisions and what people get wrong about the number, with a worked example.

Your name numbers

Numerology also reads your full birth name. Each letter has a value from 1 to 9, A is 1, B is 2 and so on, starting again at J, and the total is reduced the same way. Every letter gives your expression number and the vowels alone your soul urge number. Use the name on your birth certificate, since numerology reads the name you were given. Numbers you keep seeing in daily life, such as 111 or 444, are read the same way as angel numbers.

Where numerology comes from

Western numerology goes back to Pythagoras and his followers, who taught that numbers carry meaning as well as quantity. The method on this page, reducing a date digit by digit, is the Pythagorean system most Western numerologists use.

How your life path number is worked out

Numerology adds up the digits of your date of birth. The usual method reduces the month, the day and the year separately, each to a single digit, then adds the three and reduces the total the same way. 11, 22 and 33 are kept as they are at every step: these are the master numbers.

For a date of birth of 1990-12-29:

  1. Month: 1 + 2 = 3
  2. Day: 2 + 9 = 11 (11 is a master number, so it is kept)
  3. Year: 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, 1 + 9 = 10, 1 + 0 = 1
  4. Together: 3 + 11 + 1 = 15, 1 + 5 = 6

So the life path number is 6, The Nurturer.

Master numbers

11, 22 and 33 are called master numbers. Numerology reads each as a stronger form of the single digit its own digits add up to: 11 of 2, 22 of 4 and 33 of 6. Some numerologists reduce them all the same; this calculator keeps them, as most do.

Numerology: questions people ask

How do I calculate my life path number?

Reduce the month, the day and the year of your birth to single digits, add the three and reduce the total, keeping 11, 22 and 33 as they are. A birthday of March 15, 1990 gives 3, 6 and 1, which add up to 10 and reduce to 1.

Can my life path number change?

No. It comes from your date of birth, so it stays the same all your life. Numerology reads a personal year number, which changes every year, for the year you are in.

Is numerology the same as astrology?

No. Numerology reads the numbers in your date of birth and name, and astrology reads the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets. Many people use both side by side.

Which numerology number matters most?

The life path number is read as the main one. The expression and soul urge numbers from your name come next, and a reading puts the three together.
