Aries season 2026: dates and cusps

The usual Aries dates, March 21 to April 19, are a convention: the minute the Sun enters Aries moves about six hours later each year until a leap day pulls it back.

Aries traits

Aries tends to be direct, energetic and quick to act. Many people with this sign are good at starting things, taking the first step when others hesitate, and saying plainly what they think. Blind spots often include impatience, a short fuse when plans stall, and a habit of moving on before finishing what was started. Competitive instincts can sharpen focus, though they can also turn every disagreement into a contest. Honesty is a strength, and tact is often the skill left to practice.

Aries in the astrological tradition

Aries opens the zodiac because the tropical year is counted from the March equinox, and the Sun enters Aries at that moment. Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos calls it an equinoctial, masculine sign and gives it to Mars as one of the planet's two houses, which is why Mars still rules it. The same book makes Aries the exaltation of the Sun, where the Sun is said to be at its strongest, and the fall of Saturn, where Saturn's slow caution sits least at ease. William Lilly, writing in 1647, lists it as fiery, hot and dry, the day house of Mars.

Together these threads give a consistent picture: fire for warmth and directness, cardinal for beginnings, Mars for drive and courage. Astrologers read an Aries Sun through all three at once. That is why the sign is linked with first steps and plain speaking, and why its lessons tend to be about pacing rather than nerve.

The story behind the Aries symbol

The Ram is the golden-fleeced ram of Greek myth, sent to carry the twins Phrixus and Helle away from their stepmother's plot. Helle slipped from its back into the strait later named the Hellespont after her; Phrixus reached Colchis, where the fleece hung under guard until Jason and the Argonauts came for it. In the sky the constellation Aries is small and faint, marked mostly by its brightest star, Hamal. The sign's glyph is usually read as a pair of ram's horns. From the Northern Hemisphere the constellation is best seen on autumn nights, highest in the south around midnight in late October and November.

Aries in love

In relationships, Aries tends to be direct, enthusiastic and eager to pursue what it wants. Excitement, honesty and a partner who can hold their own often matter. It may need patience with slower moods and can move faster than others are ready for. Traditionally, Aries is said to get along with Leo and Sagittarius, fellow fire signs who share its drive, and with Gemini, an air sign that tends to keep its fire lively.

Early on, Aries usually lets its interest show. It tends to make the first move, suggest the plan and say what it likes, and it can lose interest if every step is left to it or if the other person plays hard to get for too long. Settled into a relationship, the same drive turns into loyalty and a readiness to defend a partner. Arguments flare fast and fade fast. What helps is a partner who argues back fairly, and an Aries who returns to repair things once the heat has gone.

How Aries works and decides

At work, Aries tends to be self-starting, decisive and comfortable taking the lead. Startups, sales, sports, fast-moving roles and any job with clear goals and quick feedback are common fits. Slow approvals and long routine stretches can be frustrating. Colleagues often value its drive, though it may skip planning or talk over quieter voices, so pausing to ask for input can help.

With decisions, Aries tends to choose first and adjust on the way. That works when speed matters, in a crisis, a pitch or a new venture, and less well with choices that are hard to undo, such as signing a long contract or quitting in the middle of a bad week. A useful habit for this sign is a short pause: sleep on any choice that can wait a day, and ask one slower thinker for the downside. Leading comes naturally; delegating and following up are the skills that make it stick.

Aries with friends and family

As a friend, Aries is the one who suggests the trip, the game or the late plan and turns up ready to go. It is loyal and quick to stand up for its people, and it says plainly when it disagrees. At family gatherings Aries gets things moving, from the holiday plan to the hard conversation nobody else will start. Friends who like a challenge and don't take bluntness personally tend to stay the longest.

Room to grow

A common growth edge for Aries is patience. Speed and courage are real strengths, and they land better when paired with listening. Pausing before reacting, finishing one project before starting the next, and noticing how others take a blunt remark may help. Slowing down now and then does not mean losing momentum.

Common misreadings of Aries

People search for why Aries is 'so dangerous' or 'hated'. The tradition reads Aries as forceful, not hostile: Mars here stands for courage, competition and the will to act. A quick temper is part of the picture, and so is the speed with which it cools. Aries rarely holds a grudge for long.

Another misreading is that Aries starts things and never finishes them. Cardinal signs are read as starters, yet plenty of Aries people see through what they care about. The difference is interest: once a goal feels real and personal, the drive that launched it tends to carry it to the end.

Questions about Aries

What planet rules Aries?

Mars, in traditional and modern astrology alike. Ptolemy gives Aries to Mars as its day house and Scorpio as its night house (modern astrology later handed Scorpio to Pluto). Mars is read as drive, courage and the urge to compete, and that colors almost every description of Aries.

Is Aries a fire sign?

Yes. Aries is the cardinal fire sign and the first of the three fire signs, ahead of Leo and Sagittarius. Fire stands for warmth and enthusiasm and cardinal for the urge to begin, so Aries is often called the sign of the first step.

Who should Aries avoid?

No sign is off limits. Tradition reads the squares, Cancer and Capricorn, as the most demanding pairs for Aries: Cancer wants security first, Capricorn wants a long plan, Aries wants movement. Demanding is not doomed. Such couples tend to work when each respects the other's pace.

Am I an Aries or a Pisces if born on March 20?

That depends on the year and the minute of your birth. Around March 20 the Sun crossed from Pisces into Aries at a different time each year; this page's dates table lists that minute by year and the days it fell on since 1950, and the birth chart calculator settles it for your own birth.

What is the difference between Aries and Ares?

Aries is Latin for ram: the sign and the constellation share the name. Ares is the Greek god of war, whom the Romans called Mars. The link is the ruler, since astrology gives the sign Aries to the planet named after that god.
