Scorpio traits

Scorpio tends to be determined, perceptive and private. Many people with this sign look past the surface, stay with hard subjects, and commit fully to what matters to them. Blind spots often include suspicion, holding grudges, and an all-or-nothing approach. Control can become a way to feel safe. Scorpio may share little while noticing everything. Its intensity is a strength when directed toward a purpose, and a strain when directed at doubts about others.

Scorpio in the astrological tradition

Scorpio is the fixed water sign, a feminine, night sign deep in the Northern autumn. Ptolemy makes it the night house of Mars, and it is the fall of the Moon, the sign opposite the Moon's exaltation in Taurus. Modern astrology added Pluto as Scorpio's ruler once Pluto was discovered in 1930, and many astrologers now read both. Lilly lists Scorpio as cold and moist.

Water for depth of feeling, fixed for intensity and staying power, Mars for will and Pluto for what lies hidden: Scorpio is read as the zodiac's most private and most determined sign. Its themes in the tradition are trust, loyalty, transformation and the courage to look at hard truths.

The story behind the Scorpio symbol

The Scorpion is the creature sent against Orion the hunter in Greek myth, by Gaia in some versions and by Artemis in others. Both were set in the sky on opposite sides, so that Orion sets in the west as the Scorpion rises in the east. The constellation's heart is Antares, a red supergiant whose name means rival of Ares, for its color matches the red planet. Older drawings also give Scorpio an eagle, a symbol some astrologers still use for the sign. From most of the United States the Scorpion sits low in the south on summer nights, highest around midnight in early June.

Scorpio in love

In relationships, Scorpio tends to seek depth, loyalty and honesty. Casual connection can feel thin to it, and trust usually builds slowly. It may need to feel secure before opening up, and can test people without saying so. Traditionally, Scorpio is said to get along with Cancer and Pisces, fellow water signs who share its emotional range, and with Virgo, whose steadiness and discretion often earn its trust.

Scorpio tends to be cautious at first and all in once it trusts. It reads people closely and wants a partner who is honest even when honesty is uncomfortable. Intimacy, loyalty and privacy matter a great deal, and a broken confidence is hard for it to forgive. Jealousy can appear when Scorpio feels unsure, so clarity is a gift in its relationships. When both people speak openly about what they need, Scorpio's devotion is among the steadiest in the zodiac.

How Scorpio works and decides

At work, Scorpio tends to be focused, resourceful and hard to distract. Research, investigation, strategy, analysis, high-pressure roles and deep technical work are common fits. Shallow or purely social settings may bore it. Colleagues often trust its discretion and stamina, though it may keep plans to itself, and sharing its thinking earlier can prevent misunderstandings.

Scorpio decides after studying a situation from every angle, often quietly, and then commits fully, which makes it strong in a crisis and in any choice that rewards depth over speed. The risk is holding on too long, to a plan, a rivalry or a grudge. A useful question for this sign: what would I do if I let this go? Asking it is not giving up, only choosing what is still worth the effort.

Scorpio with friends and family

Scorpio keeps few close friends and keeps them for life. It is the one you can call in the middle of the night, discreet with secrets and fierce in a friend's defense. It can take a while to open up, testing whether people are reliable before letting them in. In families it often carries the history, remembering who said what years ago, for better and for worse. Once it calls someone a friend, the word means something, and it expects the same in return.

Room to grow

A common growth edge for Scorpio is trust. Guardedness has often been learned for good reasons, yet it can keep out the very closeness it wants. Sharing small vulnerabilities and checking a suspicion before acting on it may help. Letting go of an old hurt is not the same as saying it did not matter.

Common misreadings of Scorpio

Searches ask why Scorpios are 'so dangerous' and 'so secretive'. Scorpio is read as intense and private, not dangerous: Mars and Pluto give it determination and a strong instinct to protect itself and its people. Secrecy, in the tradition, is about trust, and Scorpio shares a great deal once it feels safe.

People also wonder why a sign named after a desert creature belongs to water. The element comes from Scorpio's group of three with Cancer and Pisces, long called the water signs, and water stands for feeling and depth, which fits Scorpio far better than any scorpion's habitat.

Questions about Scorpio

What planet rules Scorpio?

In traditional astrology, Mars; in modern astrology, Pluto, with Mars as co-ruler. Mars gives Scorpio its will and courage, Pluto its link with depth, power and change, and most sign descriptions draw on both.

Is Scorpio a water sign?

Yes, the fixed water sign, in the same element as Cancer and Pisces. Water stands for feeling and insight, fixed for intensity and persistence, so Scorpio is described as the deepest and most determined of the three.

Is Scorpio a fixed sign?

Yes. Scorpio is one of the four fixed signs, with Taurus, Leo and Aquarius, which fall in the middle of their seasons. Fixed signs are read as steady and hard to move, and in Scorpio that shows as loyalty and a long memory.

Who should Scorpio avoid?

Astrology bars no pairing. Leo and Aquarius, square to Scorpio among the fixed signs, are read as its most demanding partners: Leo wants to be seen, Aquarius wants distance, Scorpio wants depth. Trust built slowly and on purpose is what tends to make them work.

Is the Sun in front of Scorpius on Scorpio birthdays?

Not anymore. With the drift of the equinox since the signs were first set out, the Sun stands in front of Virgo and then Libra through the Scorpio season, and reaches Scorpius only after it, for about a week, before moving on to Ophiuchus. The constellation section below has this year's dates.
