Your big three: Sun, Moon and rising sign
The big three are your Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign. The Sun sign is read as core identity, the Moon sign as how you feel and the rising sign as how you come across. Together they are the first thing astrologers look at in a birth chart.
| Sun sign | Core identity and drive |
|---|---|
| Moon sign | How you feel and what you need |
| Rising sign | Outer manner and first impressions |
The Sun sign
Your Sun sign is the one in a horoscope column, set by your birth date. It is read as who you are at heart: your drive, values and sense of purpose.
The Moon sign
The Moon changes sign about every two and a half days, so its sign needs your birth date and, for days it changed sign, your birth time. It is read as your emotional nature: what comforts you, how you react and what you need to feel safe.
The rising sign
The rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign on the eastern horizon at your birth, so it needs your birth time and place. It is read as your outer manner, how people first see you and how you start things.
Reading them together
A Leo Sun with a Cancer Moon and a Libra rising is read as a warm leader who feels deeply and meets people gracefully. The three often disagree, which astrologers read as the reason people are more than their Sun sign.
How to find your big three
Your Sun sign needs only your birth date, unless you were born on a day the Sun changed sign. Your Moon sign needs the date, and the time on about two days in five, because the Moon moves into a new sign every two and a half days or so. Your rising sign needs the exact time and place, since a new sign rises over the eastern horizon about every two hours. A birth certificate or a hospital record usually has the time. If you only know the time roughly, read the rising sign as a best guess and check the signs either side.
The big three in love
In love, astrologers read the three as three different needs. The Sun sign is what you want to be loved for, the Moon sign is what makes you feel looked after on a bad day, and the rising sign is the side a new date meets first. A partner who suits your rising sign but not your Moon sign tends to feel exciting at the start and harder to live with later. Comparing your Moon sign with a partner's is one of the oldest checks in relationship astrology.
When two of them share a sign
Some people have the same sign twice, such as a Sun and rising sign in Virgo, or all three in one sign. Astrologers read a doubled sign as a louder version of it: what others see matches what is inside, and the sign's habits are harder to step out of. A triple sign is rare, since it takes the Sun, the Moon and the eastern horizon in one sign at the same minute. When the three are all different, the reading is about balancing three styles, and that is the most common case.
