What the planets mean in a birth chart

By Maren Tremblay, Fatesight editor · Last updated

In a birth chart each planet governs an area of life: the Sun identity, the Moon feelings, Mercury thinking, Venus love and values, Mars drive, Jupiter growth, Saturn discipline, and the outer planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto change, imagination and transformation.

The personal planets

The Sun is identity, the Moon is feeling, Mercury is thinking and speaking, Venus is love and what you value, and Mars is drive and action. They move fast, so they differ from person to person.

Jupiter and Saturn

Jupiter is read as growth, optimism and learning. Saturn is read as discipline, limits and lessons. They are called the social planets because they link the person to the wider world.

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto

Uranus is read as change and independence, Neptune as imagination and idealism, and Pluto as deep transformation. They move slowly, so whole age groups share a sign. Their house is what makes them personal.

Planet, sign and house

Read a placement in three parts: the planet is what, the sign is how and the house is where. Mars in Gemini in the third house, for example, is read as drive that goes into talk and learning.

How fast each planet moves

The planets' speeds are why some placements are personal and others are shared. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days. Mercury usually spends two to three weeks in a sign, Venus four to five and Mars six to seven. Jupiter takes about a year a sign and Saturn about two and a half years. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto spend seven to thirty years in each, so their signs mark a generation and their houses make them your own.

Retrograde planets in a birth chart

A planet is retrograde when it seems to move backward against the stars, an effect of seeing it from the moving Earth. Every planet but the Sun and Moon does it: Mercury three or four times a year, Venus about every nineteen months, Mars about every two years, and Jupiter to Pluto for four to six months of every year. A planet retrograde at your birth is read as working in a more inward, reflective way: Mercury retrograde as thinking things over before speaking, Venus retrograde as taking time to trust. Retrograde planets are common, and most charts have at least one.

The chart ruler

The planet that rules your rising sign is called the chart ruler, and astrologers read it as one of the most important planets in your chart. For a Leo rising it is the Sun, for a Virgo or Gemini rising Mercury, for a Libra or Taurus rising Venus, for a Scorpio or Aries rising Mars. Its sign and house are read as where your life tends to find its focus, so it is worth reading straight after the big three.

The planets in love

Venus and Mars are the two planets astrologers read first for love. Venus shows what you find beautiful and how you show affection; Mars shows desire and how you pursue it. The Moon adds what you need to feel safe with someone, and Mercury how you talk things through. Comparing these four between two charts is the core of relationship astrology.
