Eclipses 2027

By Maren Tremblay, Fatesight editor · Last updated

The eclipses of 2027, with the dates, signs and where each can be seen. The year's headline is the total solar eclipse of August, one of the longest of the century on land, with several minutes of darkness over southern Spain, North Africa, Egypt and Arabia.

Eclipse season 2027

This year has five eclipses in two seasons. The first season pairs an annular eclipse with a penumbral one. The second, around the total eclipse, has a penumbral lunar eclipse on each side of it, the first so slight it barely touches the Earth's outer shadow. Eclipse seasons happen when the Sun is near the points where the Moon's path crosses the Earth's, so they recur roughly every six months.

Peak
Position17° Aquarius
Point of greatest eclipse31.3° S, 48.5° W

An annular solar eclipse happens when the Moon is too far from the Earth to cover the Sun completely, so a bright ring stays visible around it. The sky dims but does not go dark. Everywhere along the track and outside it, the Sun must be viewed through proper eclipse glasses from start to finish.

Total solar eclipse, August 2, in Leo

Peak
Position9° Leo
Point of greatest eclipse25.5° N, 33.2° E

A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon covers the whole of the Sun. Inside a narrow track the sky goes dark in the daytime and the Sun's outer atmosphere, the corona, shows around the black disc. Outside that track, people see only a partial eclipse, with a bite out of the Sun. Look at it only through proper eclipse glasses, except during the moments of totality.

What eclipses mean in astrology

Astrologers read an eclipse as a marker of a turning point in the part of life it falls in, for you, with its effects often showing over the following months. A solar eclipse is read as a start, and a lunar eclipse as a culmination, when something comes to a head. The total eclipse is read as the strongest of the year, and the penumbral ones as gentler. Look up your sign's houses below to see which parts of your life they touch.

Eclipses 2027: questions people ask

How many eclipses are there in 2027?

There are 5: annular solar eclipse on February 6, penumbral lunar eclipse on February 20, penumbral lunar eclipse on July 18, total solar eclipse on August 2, penumbral lunar eclipse on August 17.

When is eclipse season in 2027?

The eclipses of 2027 come in 2 seasons: February 6 to February 20 and July 18 to August 17.

Are eclipses bad in astrology?

No. Astrologers read them as turning points, not as good or bad events: moments when a part of your life tends to move faster, or when something that was already changing comes into the open. Most people find they make sense looking back over the following months.

Is it safe to look at an eclipse?

A lunar eclipse is safe to watch with no protection. A solar eclipse is only safe to view through proper eclipse glasses or a solar filter, except for the short moments of totality on the central track of a total eclipse.
