Palm and hand shapes: earth, air, fire and water

By Maren Tremblay, Fatesight editor · Last updated

Palmistry sorts hands into four shapes named for the elements. Compare the palm's shape with the length of the fingers: a square palm with short fingers is earth, a square palm with long fingers is air, a long palm with short fingers is fire and a long palm with long fingers is water.

How to tell your shape

Measure your palm from the wrist crease to the base of the middle finger, then compare it with the width. Then compare the middle finger's length with the palm's. The two comparisons give the four types.

Earth and air hands

Earth hands are read as practical, steady and grounded, with a liking for routine and things you can touch. Air hands are read as curious and talkative, quick to think and fond of ideas.

Fire and water hands

Fire hands are read as energetic and bold, quick to start things. Water hands are read as sensitive and imaginative, tuned to the mood of a room.

How the shape fits the lines

The shape is the frame and the lines are the detail. A water hand with a straight head line, for example, is read as a sensitive person who reasons clearly. Mixed hands are common, which palmists read as a blend of two styles.

Palm and hand shapes: earth, air, fire and water: questions people ask

Are the hand shapes the same as the zodiac elements?

They share names with the four elements used in astrology, but palmistry reads shape from the hand itself, not from a birth date.

What if my hand sits between two shapes?

Many do. Palmistry reads those as a mix of both styles.

Do hand shapes change?

The basic shape stays the same through adult life, though lines and mounts can change.
