Palm lines

Life line meaning

By Maren Tremblay, Fatesight editor · Last updated

The life line is the curved crease that wraps around the ball of the thumb. In palmistry it is read as vitality, major life changes and how steady a person's path feels. Its length is not read as how long someone lives.

How to find your life line

The life line starts at the edge of the palm between the thumb and the index finger and curves down around the fleshy mound at the base of the thumb, called the mount of Venus. It usually ends near the wrist. It is often the deepest line on the hand.

What length and depth are read as

A long, deep life line is read as steady vitality and a strong sense of stamina. A shorter or fainter one is read as a person who tires of routine and needs variety. The idea that a short life line means a short life is a popular myth. Palmistry texts read it as how a person experiences their path, not how long it lasts.

Curve and range

A wide curve that sweeps far out into the palm is read as energy and enthusiasm. A line that hugs the thumb closely is read as caution and a preference for the familiar. The more space the curve gives to the mount of Venus, the more the tradition links the person with warmth and a love of company.

Breaks, branches and a double line

A break is read as a significant change in circumstances, such as a move or a new direction in work. Branches that rise toward the fingers are read as efforts that pay off, and branches that fall as energy spent elsewhere. A second line running beside the main one, called a sister line, is read as extra support during a stretch of life.

Life line meaning: questions people ask

Does a short life line mean a short life?

No. In palmistry the length of the life line is read as how a person feels about their path and how much energy they bring to it. It is not read as a measure of years.

What does a broken life line mean?

A break is traditionally read as a change of direction, such as a new city, a new career or a new stage. The tradition reads it as a turning point, not as a warning.

Can the life line change?

Palmists say lines can deepen, fade or shift over the years, which is why a reading looks at the present state of the hand and often compares both hands.
