Palm lines

Head line meaning

By Maren Tremblay, Fatesight editor · Last updated

The head line is the crease that runs across the middle of the palm, starting between the thumb and index finger. In palmistry it is read as how a person thinks: whether they favour logic or imagination, how they make decisions and how they focus.

How to find your head line

Look for the crease that starts on the thumb side of the palm, between the thumb and index finger, and heads across the palm. It often begins joined to the life line, which curves around the base of the thumb. It sits below the heart line and, in most hands, ends under the ring finger or the little finger.

Straight or sloping

A straight head line is read as a practical, direct thinker who likes facts and clear steps. A line that slopes down toward the base of the palm is read as an imaginative thinker, drawn to creative work, stories and ideas. Most hands fall somewhere between, which palmistry takes as a mix of both.

Long and short

A long head line is read as someone who thinks things through and sees detail. A short one is read as quick and decisive, someone who prefers to get to the point. Neither is better. Palmistry treats them as styles, much as people speak of being a planner or an improviser.

Where it starts and how it breaks

A head line that starts joined to the life line is read as a careful person who weighs risks. One that starts apart from it is read as more independent and quicker to act. A break or a fork is read as a change of direction in how someone thinks, and a fork at the end is often called a writer's fork, taken as the ability to see two sides of a question.

Head line meaning: questions people ask

What does a curved head line mean?

A head line that curves gently downward is read as an imaginative, flexible mind. The deeper the slope, the more the tradition links it with creative and intuitive work.

What if I have no clear head line?

A faint or merged head line is read as a mind that works in different ways at different times. Many people's lines are shallow, so the tradition reads the whole hand rather than one crease.

Is the head line the same as the heart line?

No. The heart line is the higher crease, read as feelings. The head line is the one below it, read as thinking. On some hands the two merge into one line, called a simian line, which palmistry reads as intense focus.
